Hiking in the majestic mountains of western Montana, biking the famous Hiawatha Trail, rafting the Alberton Gorge with a bunch of fun ladies, visiting a ghost town, and soaking nightly in hot springs. What more could you ask for in a long summer weekend adventure? Join us on this epic adventure that is sure to bring all the feels!
We will do a few short (approximately 2-3 miles) hikes each day which are rated as moderate. We suggest you prepare for these hikes by hitting some local hikes that have some elevation gain and/or hit the stair-stepper at the gym to get your lungs and legs in shape.
The biking on the Hiawatha Trail is relatively easy with a slight downhill grade for most of the 15 miles. The most important part of getting in shape for the biking is preparing your glutes for sitting on a bike seat for 2-3 hours! Spend some time prior to the trip on a bike to prepare for being on 2 wheels, especially if it's been a while since you've ridden a bike!
The rafting adventure will be mostly an easy float, with some moments where you will need to paddle through some moderate level (Class II and III) rapids. Be sure your shoulders are in shape for the paddling!for you.

Plan to arrive in Missoula by 3:00pm. The Chicas shuttle will transport guests from the Missoula airport to Paradise where we will settle into our cabins at Quinn's Hot Springs Resort where we will enjoy a Welcome Dinner to get to know all the Chicas and an evening soak in the healing hot springs.
Included Meals: Welcome Dinner
Accommodation: Quinn's Hot Springs Resort
Note: The Chicas Abroad team can help you book a hotel if you would like to arrive in Missoula the day before the adventure. If you live anywhere between Bozeman and Missoula or Spokane and Missoula, the Chicas Abroad team can arrange a car transport to Missoula if you prefer not to fly.
Wake early, grab coffee and breakfast, and head to the western border of Montana and venture into Idaho to the Lookout Pass ski area. Here we will pick up our mountain bikes and helmets and join the tradition of ‘riding the Hiawatha’.
The Route of the Hiawatha was the last intercontinental rail route completed during the early 20th century, linking Chicago with the Pacific Northwest. It provided an easier, more direct route between Chicago and Seattle. Sadly, mismanagement eventually forced the company into bankruptcy and abandonment of this railroad. Now, the Hiawatha is a 15-mile bicycle route that includes several tunnels for a truly unique biking experience.
Once we’re finished cycling we’ll have lunch and stop for a short hike to stretch our legs after the long bike ride. After a full day, we’ll enjoy a relaxing dinner and evening at our cabins and another hot springs soak.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks
Accommodation: Quinn's Hot Springs Resort
Activity: Biking 15 miles on a mostly slight downhill grade with lots of stops for pictures. Bike is rated as moderate. Hiking 2.9 miles with an elevation gain of 629 feet. Hike is rated as moderate.
Today we will wake early, drink coffee, grab breakfast, and head back toward Missoula to the start our river-rafting adventure in the Alberton Gorge. This is a section of the Clark Fork River through a beautiful steep-walled canyon, which will be perfect for a hot August day with plenty of opportunities for swimming. We’ll wind our way through thick forests and great rock formations. This location also provides great viewing of bald eagles and osprey.
The adventure doesn’t end here! Once we finish river rafting, we’ll take a short drive east of Missoula to experience another quintessential Montana venture and explore Garnet Ghost Town, named “one of America’s Coolest Ghost Towns.” In 1898, approximately 1000 gold miners and their families called Garnet their home and now there is much to explore, including a few short hikes to discover the outer reaches of the town. There will be time for a relaxing lunch and time to spend discovering this Montana jewel.
We will enjoy our last night in our beautiful cabins, enjoy our time together and one last soak in the hot springs.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks
Accommodation: Quinn's Hot Springs Resort
Activity: 2-3 hours of river rafting that is rated as moderate. Since it's August, the water will not be running too strong, so we can enjoy a mostly leisurely paddle down the Clark Fork River with opportunities for swimming along the way. We will also do some short hikes around the Garnet Ghost Town, rated as moderate.
Sadly, it’s our last day and we plan to make the most of it. We’ll enjoy a later start today before we take the short drive to Plains, MT. We’ll have breakfast and a wander through the shops in Plains before turning towards Missoula for a short hike before our trip concludes at 2:00pm.
A Missoula tradition is the hike to the “M” which represents the University of Montana. While this is a short hike, just 1.2 miles, it is considered as ‘moderately challenging’ with multiple switchbacks. Don’t worry, we’ll take the time we need to complete the hike.
We will return to the Missoula airport at 2:00pm for any flights. Flights should be made for after 3:00 pm.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Activity: Moderate-level hike of 1.2 miles roundtrip with 620 ft elevation gain over 11 switchbacks. Although this is a short hike, the elevation gain is no joke! Hiker-booty gains for sure!
We will be staying at Quinn's Hot Springs Resort near Paradise, MT. All cabins are double occupancy with 2 beds. We will pair you with another Chica if you are traveling alone.
Meals are included as outlined in the itinerary, plus we will always have snacks on board. Water and other non-alcoholic beverages will be included with all meals. You will be able to purchase additional drinks or alcohol at our dinners. Our goal is to support local businesses as much as possible.
