Embedded within a dramatic landscape at the meeting point between the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon Basin, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is among the greatest artistic, architectural and land use achievements anywhere in the world. This masterpiece is the most significant tangible legacy of the Inca civilization. Recognized for outstanding cultural & natural values, this UNESCO World Heritage Site covers 32,592 hectares of the mountain slopes, peaks & valleys surrounding its heart – the spectacular monument of “La Ciudadela” (The Citadel) at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. Built in the 15th century, Machu Picchu was abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. It was not until 1911 that the archaeological complex was made known again to the world by Hiram Bingham III on an expedition funded by Yale University and the National Geographic Society.

The group will awake in the historical city of Cusco and enjoy a special experience this morning! At the beautiful Exhala Yoga Studio a sound healing ceremony will be performed for the guests. Sound healing is a conduit of frequency between worlds. Through musical sound baths the musician is able to connect each person’s energy field to their higher self and release energy blocks and toxins. The toxins are often released through the shedding of tears and guests come away from ceremonies refreshingly cleansed and renewed. The remainder of the day will be at leisure for guests to either relax or explore the city on their own. Sightseeing and restaurant suggestions will be provided for the guests. Meals: Breakfast
We will be staying in a variety of boutique hotels and mountain lodges as we travel across Peru. The rooms are double occupancy, but single occupancy can be requested at an additional cost.
Meals are included as outlined in the itinerary. Water and other non-alcoholic beverages will be included with all meals. You will be able to purchase additional drinks or alcohol at our dinners.
Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions on the registration form and we will accommodate. Be prepared to supplement the included meals with your favorite snacks.
The entirety of the trip we will be at high elevations so this will make the hiking and general activities more difficult due to the reduced amount of oxygen at altitude. Cusco sits at 11,151 feet above sea level and all of our hiking will be above 7,000 feet of elevation. Additionally, some of the hikes will include significant elevation gain. The highest elevation we will experience is about 16,500 feet. These kinds of conditions are difficult to train for if you live at a low elevation, so we recommend finding the highest hikes you can find in your area and hike these frequently to train. We also recommend requesting altitude sickness medication from your doctor so you can try to alleviate your symptoms in a proactive manner. Comfortable hiking shoes or boots will be imperative for this trip. You will want to make sure they are broken in as we will be hiking long distances. The longest hike we will do in a day is 9.3 miles and the shortest will be 5.2 miles so be prepared to hike these distances at a 30 min/mile pace. This pace may be altered when we reach higher altitude hikes as we will need to hike slower to avoid altitude sickness.
This trip will require training beforehand so you can be as comfortable and fit as possible. Reach out to your Chicas Abroad guide if you have any additional questions or concerns. We can suggest ideas on how to train and prepare for this trip.
