About this trip

Discover the magic of Italy’s Ligurian coast on an unforgettable women’s hiking adventure through Portofino and the iconic Cinque Terre. This journey invites you to slow down, savor Mediterranean beauty, and explore pastel-colored fishing villages perched along dramatic sea cliffs. From charming seaside Camogli to the postcard-perfect towns of Monterosso, Vernazza, and Manarola, each day blends scenic coastal trails with delicious food, rich culture, and time to simply breathe it all in.

You’ll wander ancient pathways lined with terraced vineyards, climb to panoramic viewpoints, and dip into hidden coves and quiet beaches. Coastal trains and ferries connect the region’s most picturesque spots, allowing you to experience each village from a new perspective. Throughout the trip, there’s room for both adventure and relaxation—leisurely lunches overlooking the sea, sunset strolls, or a gelato break in a lively piazza.

Designed for women who crave connection, challenge, and beauty in equal measure, this journey is the perfect blend of hiking, culture, and coastal charm. Whether you’re seeking meaningful time with like-minded travelers or a personal reset powered by nature, the Cinque Terre offers an experience you’ll want to return to again and again.

Important Notes

Activity Level –  Moderate

This trip offers a moderate level of physical activity, with daily hikes ranging from coastal cliffside paths to stone staircases and terraced vineyard trails. Expect 4–11 miles of walking most days, including steady ascents and descents, uneven terrain, and occasional narrow sections with stunning sea views. While the pace is relaxed and allows plenty of time for breaks, travelers should feel comfortable being on their feet for several hours and navigating varied terrain. With the right preparation, the hikes are rewarding, energizing, and accessible to most active women looking for an engaging outdoor adventure.

Weather

May in the Cinque Terre and Portofino region is one of the most beautiful times to visit, with mild, comfortably warm spring weather and longer daylight hours. Temperatures typically range from the low 60s to mid-70s°F (16–24°C), perfect for hiking without the intense heat of summer. Expect plenty of sunshine, blooming wildflowers along the trails, and refreshing sea breezes, though light rain showers are still possible. Overall, it’s an ideal month for active travelers who want pleasant temperatures and vibrant coastal scenery.

Arrive in the laid-back seaside village of Camogli, your first taste of the Italian Riviera. Colorful houses tumble toward the sea, fishing boats bob in the harbor, and the promenade is lined with cafés perfect for your first espresso or aperol spritz. After checking into your cozy hotel, you’ll have time to wander the cobblestone lanes, dip your toes in the water, or simply sit and soak in that “I’m really in Italy” feeling.

This evening we will have a Welcome Dinner with the group to kick off our adventure in the Cinque Terre!

This first hike of the day is approximately 4 miles.

From here, you can choose to continue on foot for an additional 6 miles or hop a local ferry around the headland to glamorous Portofino, where pastel houses frame a perfect crescent harbor. Those deciding to continue hiking from Framura to Bonassola will enjoy 7 more miles of picturesque views.

Exploring Manarola, Corniglia & Riomaggiore (Hike 1 mile or 4 miles)

With your Cinque Terre Train & Trails Card in hand, you’ll hop on the coastal train after breakfast and glide to Manarola, often considered the most photogenic of the five villages. Think colorful homes clinging to the cliffs, terraced vineyards above, and waves crashing below. Spend time exploring the backstreets and harbor, then choose your hiking adventure.

Take a longer walk of approximately 4 miles up toward Corniglia for big sea views, or challenge yourself on the steeper (1 mile, but much more challenging), more technical trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore, where stone steps and high vantage points reward you with incredible panoramas of the coastline. If you’d rather skip the steeps, you can always use your rail card to village-hop by train instead. In the evening, return to Monterosso for al fresco dinner and maybe some local seafood.

The path undulates along the hillside with constant sea views, terraced vineyards, and postcard-perfect glimpses of villages appearing around bends. This first hike is approximately 3 miles.

In Vernazza, arguably the most photographed of all, fishing boats rock in the tiny harbor beneath pastel buildings and ancient watchtowers. You can linger here and catch the train back or continue on foot along the panoramic trail (approximately 5 miles) to Monterosso. Celebrate your hiking day with a well-earned gelato or an aperitivo in the piazza.

This is a longer hike with rewarding elevation and incredible views over the Gulf of Poets, passing through Colle del Telegrafo and the tiny hamlet of Campiglia before descending to the sea.

Arrive in storybook Portovenere, a UNESCO-listed gem where striped Gothic churches, ancient walls, and rows of tall, colorful houses guard the harbor. Explore the Church of St. Peter perched dramatically on a rocky point, wander the narrow streets, or simply sit on the waterfront with a glass of local wine. Reviews

What a fabulous trip to Greece and the islands of Santorini and Mykonos! This is my second trip with Chicas Abroad and both trips have been stellar. Last year I hiked the Camino De Santiago trail with the Chicas and had a blast. The hotels are top of the line. You won’t be disappointed. I love that everything is arranged for you and all you have to do is enjoy! No stress on vacation as Melanie and her trip leaders take care of everything. The activities and tours are carefully chosen and all have been fabulous. And you get to make new friends with your fellow travelers. If you are looking for a tour company that is top of the line, check out ChicasAbroad.com for all of their fabulous trips! I am already looking forward to my next trip with the Chicas!

Just returned from 8 days in Greece with Chicas Abroad! What an amazing trip. From Athens to Santorini to Mykonos back to Athens. From the time I landed until the time I left I didn’t have to think about a thing. Everything was thoughtfully planned, including free time to explore and to see all of the relevant sights. It was a dream vacation. I have met wonderful ladies from all across the country, whom I will remain friends with for years to come. Melanie and Kathy were the most excellent Chicas guides! I loved every single minute. Can’t wait for the next adventure!

I traveled to Greece with 2 friends from my hometown and we had a wonderful time. However, the Chicas Abroad leaders, Melanie and Kathy had all the details planned extremely well and everyone was so nice that I would not hesitate to take another Chicas’ trip on my own. What a confidence booster! It was a super experience all the way around. Great job ladies!

This was my first trip with the Chicas. It will not be my last! The accommodations were top notch. The activity level was very active, we truly had great adventure. I learned so much thru the people I met. There was a real sence of belonging. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and fun as well. I started out with strangers but gained a new group of strong friends with these ladies. It was an unforgettable experience.

This trip felt “intimate” and very cultural. I enjoyed meeting meeting the food artisans in their shops (pasta, chocolate, dairy). The chefs and owners of several restaurants came to our table to welcome us, and will always remember dinner at Monica’s family home.

We could not have had the experience we had without your assistance. From the driver who picked us up from the airport to the driver of the 55 passenger bus the drivers were amazing. Having a guide for every excursion/tour was a must. Our tickets were ready, no lines to wait in, and having a knowledgeable guide was so appreciated!!! We were able to see everything we hoped to. Our time in Grimaldi was so special…we didn’t know what to expect. The people of Grimaldi were so kind and made us feel very welcomed. A trip of a lifetime that we were able to experience as a family🇮🇹❤️
