Ready to explore the Swiss Alps on foot and by rail, all while bonding with a group of adventurous women? You’ve come to the right place! This week-long journey through Switzerland promises a perfect blend of stunning landscapes, charming villages, and immersive cultural experiences. Get ready to be captivated by the alpine beauty of wooden chalets, the melodic sound of cowbells, and the incredible hiking trails that weave through one of the most scenic regions in the world.
Our adventure begins with three nights in Pontresina, a serene village tucked away in the picturesque Engadine Valley—one of Switzerland’s best-kept secrets. Here, we’ll embark on hikes through lush forests, vibrant alpine meadows, and alongside crystal-clear lakes. This is the perfect introduction to Switzerland’s natural beauty, where every turn brings new wonders and every breath of fresh mountain air rejuvenates the soul.
Next, we’ll experience the magic of the Glacier Express, one of the most famous and breathtaking rail journeys in the world. The train ride takes us across the Swiss Alps, from St. Moritz to Zermatt, offering unparalleled views of the majestic mountains, valleys, and glaciers. It’s a journey that will leave you in awe, and a chance to sit back, relax, and take in the panoramic beauty of Switzerland from the comfort of a world-class train.
Once we arrive in Zermatt, we’ll spend four nights nestled in this iconic mountain village, with the towering Matterhorn as our backdrop. Here, we’ll have a choice of exhilarating hikes, each offering stunning views and the chance to explore the dramatic alpine landscapes. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual explorer, Zermatt offers trails for every level, ensuring everyone can enjoy the beauty of the Swiss Alps at their own pace.

Highlights
Activity Level – Moderate
Longer distances on rugged and varied terrain with regular steep ascents and descents. Ideal for regular hikers with a good level of fitness or beginners looking for a challenge. A total of 22-32 miles are covered over 5 days of hiking with distances ranging from 3 miles to 9 miles each day. On a few days, you can choose if you’d like to do a ”gentle” or more “challenging“ hike. We will have two guides on this adventure to make it a true, “choose your own adventure” experience!
Weather
June is a great month to visit the Swiss Alps as the weather begins to warm and there’s still snow on the peaks. Highs will be in the 50s-60s F and lows in the 40s.
Money & Tipping
All the excursions listed in the itinerary are included. Bring cash/credit cards for purchasing souvenirs, additional snacks/meals, alcoholic drinks, extra activities, and other items. You can either order Swiss Francs from your bank at home or use an ATM on arrival in Switzerland to get some cash. Exchanging USD to Francs at the airport or at a bank in Switzerland not always easy and doesn’t give the best exchange rates.
All gratuities are included with the exception of those for your Chicas Abroad tour leaders. Tipping the Chicas Abroad tour leader is optional and not included in the price of your adventure.

Day 1-Arrive Zurich
June 20 – Arrive in Zurich and take train to Pontresina
Plan your international flight to arrive in Zurich (airport code ZRH) by 12:00 PM, and get ready to kick off the adventure of a lifetime! Upon arrival, we’ll meet up at the airport with your fellow adventure-seekers, and from there, we’ll begin our journey to the Swiss Alps. We’ll travel in style by train, taking in the stunning Swiss countryside as we make our way to Pontresina, a charming village tucked away in the serene Engadine Valley. The train ride is not just a means of transport; it’s a chance to soak in the breathtaking views of mountains, forests, and valleys—setting the tone for the unforgettable week ahead.
Once we arrive in Pontresina, we’ll check into our cozy accommodations, where you can settle in and relax before the exciting hikes and adventures that await. After you’ve had a moment to freshen up and take in your beautiful surroundings, we’ll gather for a hearty welcome dinner. This will be the perfect time to get to know your fellow hikers, share a toast to the adventure ahead, and indulge in delicious local cuisine—fueling up for the days of exploration, camaraderie, and breathtaking views that are sure to follow.

Day 2 - Train and Hike
June 21 – Bernina Bahn train and easy 4.5 mile circular hike
Today, we’ll embark on an unforgettable journey as we catch the Bernina Bahn, a UNESCO-listed train that will take us from Pontresina to Bernina. The train ride itself is a highlight—winding through some of Switzerland’s most stunning landscapes, with jaw-dropping views of towering peaks, alpine lakes, and lush valleys unfolding at every turn.
Once we arrive in Bernina, we’ll step off the train and onto the trail for an easy yet breathtaking hike. Our route will take us around the serene Lago Bianco, with its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding mountains. As we continue, we’ll follow a scenic path that leads to Alp Grum, a charming spot where we’ll stop to take in the stunning surroundings before we begin our ascent to the Sassat Mason mountain hut. This hike offers the perfect mix of peaceful nature walks and gentle mountain challenges, allowing us to connect with the beauty of the Swiss Alps while savoring every step in the company of like-minded women adventurers.
After reaching the mountain hut and soaking in the views, we’ll make our way back to Pontresina by train, giving us time to relax and unwind after a day of exploration. The afternoon will be free to enjoy at your leisure—whether you want to relax in the charming village, pamper yourself with a spa treatment, or share stories with new friends over a cup of Swiss hot chocolate.

Note on Lunches & Dinners: To keep the package trip cost low and to allow you to choose your own meals to best fuel your body for these hiking days, most lunches and dinners are not included in the package (with the exception of the Welcome and Farewell Dinners and lunch on the Glacier Express train) and will be at your own expense.

Day 3 - Hike & Explore
June 22 – Choose your own adventure: gentle 4 mi, or moderate 8 mi
Today, the choice is yours! Whether you’re craving a challenge or a more leisurely experience, we’ve got two amazing hikes that cater to different energy levels, each offering stunning views and a sense of adventure.
For the adventurous spirit looking to push yourself a little further, the Valley Roseg hike is a rewarding challenge. This 8-mile hike takes you on a steep ascent up to Fuorcla Surlej, where the views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers will take your breath away. At the top, you’ll be treated to a well-deserved lunch at a mountain restaurant, where you can refuel and savor the beauty of the Alps around you.
Afterward, we’ll continue the journey to Corvatsch Mittelstation Muriel, where we’ll hop on a combination of cable cars, buses, and trains to return to Pontresina—giving you a chance to rest your legs after a thrilling day of hiking and exploration.
For those looking for a more relaxed adventure with plenty of scenic beauty, the Klimaweg hike is a perfect option. This 4-mile route offers a more leisurely pace while still giving you the opportunity to experience the majesty of the Alps. You’ll walk at high altitude, taking in spectacular views of the valley below, with the help of cable cars and mountain railways to ease your ascent and descent. This is a great choice if you want to enjoy the landscape at a comfortable pace, without sacrificing the stunning alpine experience.
No matter which hike you choose, you’ll be surrounded by the company of amazing women, each on their own adventure, and you’ll walk away with memories of the Swiss Alps and the incredible sense of achievement that comes with exploring this majestic region. Day 4 - Glacier Express
June 23 – Glacier Express Train to Zermatt
Today, sit back, relax, and indulge in one of the most scenic and unique train journeys in the world aboard the Glacier Express—the slowest “express” train on the planet! This 8-hour journey from St. Moritz to Zermatt is an experience in itself, offering you the chance to immerse yourself in the breathtaking Swiss Alps as they unfold before your eyes. With every twist and turn of the route, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of towering peaks, lush valleys, and quaint alpine villages.
As we travel, we’ll cross 291 bridges, pass through 91 tunnels, and make our way over the Oberalp Pass, which reaches a towering height of 2,033 meters—providing jaw-dropping vistas at every turn. Don’t worry about missing the views while enjoying your lunch, because it will be served directly to your seat, ensuring you can dine in style while taking in the ever-changing scenery. It’s the perfect way to relax, unwind, and let the beauty of the Swiss landscape sweep you away.
When we finally arrive in Zermatt, you’ll be greeted by the iconic Matterhorn, standing proudly above the village with its striking pyramidal peak. This picturesque mountaineering town will be our home for the next four nights, giving you plenty of time to explore, relax, and soak in the beauty of the Alps.
Today is all about luxury, relaxation, and pure Swiss magic, as we travel through some of the most stunning landscapes in the world. With the best views right outside your window, this is a journey you’ll never forget.

Day 5 - 5 Lakes Hike
June 24 – Funicular and Hike around 5 Alpine Lakes
Get ready for a day of adventure, stunning scenery, and unforgettable moments as we hike in the shadow of the iconic Matterhorn! We’ll kick off the day with a funicular ride from Zermatt to Sunnegga, followed by another short ride up to Blauherd station, where our hike begins. Starting at over 2,500 meters above sea level, we’ll immediately feel the exhilaration of high-altitude hiking as we set out on a 6.5-mile trail that will take us past five stunning alpine lakes—each offering breathtaking views of the mighty Matterhorn.
Fingers crossed for a clear, sunny day, because we’re hoping to see the Matterhorn’s reflection in the crystal-clear waters of the lakes—perfect for those Instagram-worthy shots! The first part of the trail is relatively flat, giving us time to settle into the hike, enjoy the scenery, and head toward a charming mountain hut where we’ll have the chance to grab a coffee or snack before continuing on.
As we trek through this stunning landscape, the trail will wind through areas rich in moorland flora and rare wildflowers—a true paradise for nature lovers. We might even be lucky enough to spot the rare black-nosed sheep, known for their distinctive looks! As we approach the end of the hike, we’ll reach a cozy lodge with an outdoor terrace, where we’ll take a well-deserved break and indulge in a delicious local fondue—a perfect way to savor the flavors of the region while soaking in the epic views of the Matterhorn.
When we’ve had our fill of delicious fondue and breathtaking vistas, we’ll make our way to Sunnegga, where you’ll have the option to either hike back down to Zermatt or take the funicular for a relaxing ride back to town.
Today is all about embracing the spirit of adventure, the stunning natural beauty of the Swiss Alps, and the camaraderie of hiking with a group of incredible women. Day 6 - Matterhorn!
June 25 – Hike to Matterhorn Base Camp or Easy Jaunt to Zmutt
Today is all about choosing your adventure and embracing the spirit of exploration with an unforgettable day of hiking in the heart of the Swiss Alps! Whether you’re ready to push your limits or take in the beauty of the Matterhorn at a more relaxed pace, there’s something for every woman ready to experience the thrill of the mountains.
For the adventurous souls seeking a real challenge, we’ll head to the Matterhorn Base Camp, Hoernli Hut—a true bucket-list hike! This trail will take us to one of the most iconic spots in all of Switzerland, where we’ll be surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Matterhorn and may even spot climbers in action as they prepare to summit the mighty peak. While we won’t be summiting today (don’t worry, we’re leaving that for the mountaineers!), Hoernli Hut is a stunning, high-altitude destination where we can relax, soak in the views, and enjoy a well-deserved break on the terrace. It’s a chance to challenge yourself and feel the exhilaration of being at the foot of one of the world’s most iconic mountains, all while sharing the adventure with an amazing group of women.
For those who want a more relaxed and scenic day, we’ve got another incredible option. We’ll head to the romantic hamlet of Zmutt, where we’ll follow a charming trail through traditional wooden chalets with impressive views of the Matterhorn’s north face. This hike offers a beautiful mix of nature, Swiss culture, and tranquility. It’s perfect for soaking in the breathtaking scenery at a leisurely pace, all while enjoying the fresh mountain air and the peaceful surroundings of this picturesque alpine village.
No matter which trail you choose, you’ll be surrounded by a sisterhood of women adventurers, each forging her own path, supporting each other, and making memories that will last a lifetime. Day 7 - Cog Railway
June 26 – Gornergrat Cog Railway and Nature Trail Hike
Today, we’re in for a beautiful, relaxed day of exploration as we embark on a scenic journey to the stunning Gornergrat! We’ll start by hopping on the Gornergrat cog railway from Zermatt, a ride that will take us up to the Rifflealp station—where incredible views of the Swiss Alps and the mighty Matterhorn await.
Once we arrive, we’ll set off on a gentle nature trail that will lead us through serene forests, vibrant alpine meadows, and fields blanketed in colorful wildflowers. This is the perfect hike for those who want to immerse themselves in the peaceful beauty of the Alps, taking time to breathe in the fresh mountain air and admire the natural surroundings. The trail offers sweeping views of glaciers and peaks, while the rich flora and tranquil atmosphere will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a dream.
At the end of our walk, we’ll descend back to Zermatt on the Sunnegga funicular, soaking in the last moments of Swiss alpine beauty. It’s a perfect way to unwind after a week of incredible hikes, stunning landscapes, and bonding with inspiring women.
Tonight, we’ll gather for a special Farewell Dinner, where we’ll reflect on the incredible memories we’ve made and celebrate the unforgettable experiences we’ve shared over the past week. Day 8 - Depart Zermatt
June 27 – Train from Zermatt to Zurich
Today, we’ll say goodbye to the stunning Swiss Alps as we transfer from Zermatt to Zurich via scenic train. It’s a beautiful and peaceful journey, offering one last chance to soak in the breathtaking landscapes that have been our backdrop for an unforgettable week.
As we travel, we’ll reflect on the incredible adventure we’ve shared together—hiking through lush alpine meadows, bonding over mountain vistas, enjoying cozy dinners with new friends, and conquering challenges as a supportive group of women. From the stunning views of the Matterhorn to the quiet moments of connection, this week has been a celebration of sisterhood, adventure, and the kind of memories that will last a lifetime.
We plan to arrive in Zurich in the early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to take in the beauty of this vibrant city before heading to the airport. If you are flying out today, please make sure to schedule your flight for after 4:00 PM, to ensure you have ample time to get to the airport and say your goodbyes.
As we wrap up our journey, we leave not just with amazing stories and stunning photos, but with lasting friendshipsand a deep sense of fulfillment from having explored the Swiss Alps together.
